wax on, badge off

February 18, 2006 16:29 (Sydney Australia)

Everybody going to SXSW gets to upload their photo to go on their lanyard badge rather than having to rely on the one taken post-2-flights-and-jet-lagged-the-morning-after-looking-like-shit.

So here I was, ready to upload a lovely photo of myself, and then I got to the actual upload page:

Please Read This Carefully.

Every SXSW Registrant is issued a badge on a lanyard that is to be worn around the neck. As a security and theft-deterrent measure, a photograph of the registrant (you) is printed on the badge.

The photograph you upload will be reviewed by SXSW to verify its usability. After it’s approved, you’ll see it on your virtual badge page.

All photos should be a clear shot of your face. No side profiles will be accepted. Photos which have something covering the face or head will not be accepted. This includes sunglasses. The more like a passport or driver’s license photograph, the more likely it’ll be approved.

I thought “jeez, that sounds a bit serious,” so I proceeded to upload a photo of our favourite little Guru; Mr Miyagi:

Eager to see whether the organisers did, in fact, have a sense of humour I checked back to the page a few times a day…

...and low and behold.

...this wasn’t what showed up.

Damn! What I did get though, was this email from the staff:

We all love Pat Morita, but we really need a photo of YOUR face. Thanks.

What a great response!

I had considered pushing for a photo of Steve Irwin, in the hopes that they wouldn’t recognise him, but after that response I think I’ll leave them be.

It’s a shame their staff are so nice as, you have to admit, this badge photo would have rocked:

You’re lucky you didn’t get the thrashing you deserve for such anti-establishment behaviour :-)

Who the hell is Mr Miyagi/Pat Morita anyway?

Kath: cover your eyes!

Now let’s all move along and pretend we didn’t hear you say that Maxine…

Well, I do now having followed the link. In defense of my ignorance:

1. I am largely unfamiliar with all but the most basic aspects of Happy Days. As a child I boycotted it as a representation of American cultural imperialism (seriously! – what a little wowser I was)

2. The Karate Kid is a cultural icon I have somehow managed to miss. No politics behind this, just the wrong place at the wrong time. I was prolly watching Jim Jarmusch movies or something like that…..

Always such a rebel, tim

That’s hilarious.. would love to see steve irwin on your badge, funnily enough I think you could pull it off! except of course for the croc.

wax on wax off-must have been due to my parenting-good or bad????? depending on your taste in movies, you choose. very funny tim

I’ve had many a good chuckle while auditing uploaded badge photos. Yesterday I finally let someone else do some because I was busy and Justin actually had a moment of downtime. Justin started chuclking and so we looked over at his screen to see that Pat Morita had registered for SXSW !

By the way, I would like to take this opportunity to discourage SXSW -attending readers of this blog from uploading joke photos ;-)

I don’t remember Miyagi as Arnold. I remember this guy…

David: must be interesting working behind the scenes on such a big event. Are you also responsible for any of the Rails coding of the reg system?

Gav: What’s more is that it turns out he was the original Mr T.

Was never into Happy Days so I’ll leave that one up to you oldies (ho ho ho).

Morita was on Happy Days “Happy Days” (1974) TV Series …. Matsuo ‘Arnold’ Takahashi (1975-1976, 1982-1983) ... aka Happy Days Again, and he was on a Mr T episode, the Incredible Hulk,The Love Boat, Starsky and Hutch, Laverne & Shirley, Welcome Back Kotter!!! I think I’ll stop there only 40+ will remember all these.
